I am back and with something that doesn’t involve bananas. Woah, shocking!
With Diwali just around the corner, I thought I’ll share a fun and easy DIY project.
This DIY project is something I saw on Pinterest over an year ago when I was looking for ideas for Diwali decor and I finally got around to making them this year.
So, what if you can get flowers that you can use this festive season for a fraction of the cost? What if they never wilt? Most importantly, what if they can be reused over and over again? Well, simply put, it would be fantastic and bonus points because it’s going to be fun for both you and your kid(s).
Presenting to you the four step guide to making faux flowers. I used colored tissue papers. Crepe paper would work just fine too.
Things you need:
- Tissue papers in colors of your choice
- A stapler
- A pencil
- A bottle lid to trace circles
- A pair of scissors
How to:
1. Layer a few tissues together and trace as many circles as you can on the top one using the pencil and bottle lid. I used three tissues at a time and they were large enough to let me draw four circles at once.
2. Cut out these circles using the scissors making sure you are holding all the layers together. Staple at the center of the cut out circles to make sure everything stays in place.
3. Now start by picking each layer or a few layers of paper at a time and crumple them upwards towards the center of the circle.
4. Keep repeating this till you get done with all the layers of paper you have. Once done, spread out the paper to make them look more realistic.
You can get a denser flower if you crumple each layer individually. I did not have the patience to do that.
Your lovely flowers are now ready to be used however you want them. You can cut out leaves out of green colored tissues and add it to them, string them together into a garland, use them as is for a floral rangoli, as part of a table centerpiece etc.
You could even layer different colored tissues to get a multicolored flower.
This is a fun activity to do with your kid(s). If you, like me, have a kid who still doesn’t actually understand all your instructions, this still is fun because they get to play with the mess you make while you go on about the project. If you have an older kid, you could cut, staple the paper and then let the kid make the flowers or whatever works. It’s going to be fun even if you don’t have kids. I particularly enjoyed the time when A was napping and I went on to get quite a lot of them made. So therapeutic. Oops, did I just say that out aloud? 😉
