Modern Cloth Diapering, Parenting Hacks

All About Smart Bottoms

If you follow me on Instagram, you may well be aware that we are one of the International Diaper Ambassadors for the cloth diaper brand – Smart Bottoms.

I have had quite a few people reaching out to me to know more about Smart Bottoms, how they work, where they can buy them, what I do as an Ambassador etc. So I thought I’d quickly put together a post with all the details about it.

Before I begin, let me state clearly that I am not paid by the brand to write this. We support the brand loyally because they are one of the most amazing brand of cloth diapers out there.

The quality is spot on, there are so many colors and prints to choose from and they are well worth the money spent on them.

The first and foremost reason why I gave Smart Bottoms a try was because the inner was organic cotton and not just any organic cotton but super soft organic cotton of topnotch quality.

The diapers we were using back then were mostly ones with a microfibre insert and they just weren’t working for us since A was/is a heavy wetter.

I did try some local cotton, bamboo and hemp ones but they turned out to be very bulky or would just bunch up after a while. Coincidentally a friend who was visiting the U.S.A at that time gifted us a few of these and thus started our Smart Cloth Diapering journey.

The Smart Bottoms 3.1 is an All-in-One diaper with the insert/soaker stitched to the diaper – which means you are spared the trouble of inserting and removing inserts. The insert is long enough for you to customize how you fold it depending on whether you have a boy or girl. Here’s what it looks like:

The quality of the PUL, the inner organic cotton and the snaps are all absolutely fabulous. I know a lot of people (especially back in India) find them a little pricey but trust me, they are well worth every penny you pay. I’d also like to add here that they are 100% made in the USA. I know people who have been using them for well over two years (some on multiple babies too) without any issue.

What makes them awesome-er is their customer support and their various support forums (this, this and this) on Facebook which over the period of the last one year has become one of my most favorite Internet communities. Some of the best mommies (and daddies) are part of these and it’s so much fun to have such a large community of like-minded people.

If these reasons are not enough to convince you to try one, you should probably have a look at all the prints and solid colors they have. Apart from a regular lineup of diapers, Smart Bottoms also does retailer exclusives which means you are never short of prints or colors to choose from. And you get the best kind of adrenaline rush while trying to score these exclusives because most of them are gone in no time and by that I mean less than 5 minutes after they go live. Sounds exciting or what?!

And imagine the tons of coordinating mini outfits you can come up with. Don’t believe me? See this.

You surely can’t come up with such cute outfits with ‘sposies, can you?

That isn’t all, they also make a ton of other great stuff than just cloth diapers including swim diapers, car-seat savers, training pants, doll carriers to name a few and are coming up even more exciting stuff.

Finally, coming to the part about us being ambassadors – well, one thing I want to clarify first is that I do not sell Smart Bottoms (stating this first because I have had at least 20 different people asking me if I sell them. :D). So, as ambassadors, what we do is help spread love about this brand we absolutely love on various forms of social media, answer questions people may have about SBs and also help troubleshoot SB related issues/problems people may have.

If you still want to know more, you can always have a look at the Smart Bottoms website here for any help you may need right from where to buy, how to prep them, how to wash them, etc. The Smart Bottoms blog is a treasure trove of information too (and not just for cloth diapering related information).

    1. Hey Greeshma, yes, I started cloth diapering when he was about a month and half old. The bulkiness depends on the brand, the type of inserts you use, weight of the baby, etc.
Since most cloth diapers are one size, they fit differently at different stages and the fit varies from baby to baby as well. If you think they are too bulky, you can try other brands to see if they fit better. πŸ™‚

  1. Hi madhumitha,
I wanted to know how many cloth diapers would a baby need let’s say in a day. I read somewhere that one needs to have atleast 30 cloth diapers. Is this true?
Is buying from the website the only place to get it? The website doesn’t function well on my phone? Kindly oblige
    Thanks

    1. Hi Tanvi,

At a newborn stage, assuming you wash every other day, you would easily require about 25 of them if you plan to cloth diaper full time. This is because the number of pees and poops is a LOT at this stage.
Ideally I would suggest you use All in Ones/Pockets, etc. along with flats and prefolds since. Flats and prefolds worked the best for us at this stage. πŸ™‚

      Hope this helps.

  2. Hello Madhu,

Thanks a lot for all your information. It really helped me take the decision to cloth diaper my bub πŸ™‚ ! He is 4 months old now. As you suggested, I have bought AIOs (Since I really felt any other type of diapers might not fit my lifestyle :p) from different brands. I have a few bumgenius elemental, Smartbottoms 3.1 & bambino miosolo. Now my problem is that, I see that all the diapers cut into my son’s skin :(. I tried different rise settings but still it doesn’t seem to work. Although there have been very few leaks, the fact that it is cutting into his skin is bothering me a lot. Do you think it is something wrong I’m doing with the settings or should i try more brands?

    Thanks a lot πŸ™‚
